Bywater Books is proud to welcome our 2019 Publishing Intern, Mayee Zhu.
Mayee (she/her) is currently working on her Master of Arts in Professional, Technical, Business, and Scientific Writing at East Carolina University. Her focus is on both Technical Writing and Creative Writing, and she earned certificates in Technical and Professional Communications (TPC) as a graduate student and Business and Technical Communications (BTC) as an undergraduate. In addition, she is a part-time Editorial Assistant with the North Carolina Literary Review.
Mayee is conversationally fluent in Mandarin and Spanish and developing additional fluency in written and spoken Mandarin and Spanish to prepare for English-to-Mandarin and English-to-Spanish technical translation. She enjoys writing feminist speculative fiction and poetry.
During this internship, she will focus on the wide array of jobs and processes that make up the publishing profession while working with professionals who are equally passionate about LGBT+ representation in publishing and who advocate for and support queer writers of color. Her goals are to (1) Learn how to edit using CMOS, identify marketable books, develop promotional strategies, and deal with capacity issues, (2) Better understand the blueprint of a publishing business, and (3) Build a mutually supportive and helpful relationship with Bywater Books.
