K. M. SOEHNLEINÂ is the author of three novels: his Lambda Literary Award-winning debut, The World of Normal Boys, a story of sexual awakening and family tragedy, now in its tenth printing; You Can Say You Knew Me When, set in San Francisco during the Beat era of 1960 and the dot-com bust of 2000; and Robin and Ruby, a sequel to The World of Normal Boys, a brother-sister story set on the Jersey shore in the middle of the 1980s.
He is the recipient of the Henfield Prize in short fiction and a Rainin Filmmaking Grant for screenwriting. His journalism has appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, Out, The Village Voice and San Francisco Magazine. His personal essays have appeared in collections including Who’s Your Daddy: Gay Men Write about their Mentors and Forerunners (Lambda Literary Award-winner); Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times; and Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys.
Karl received an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and currently teaches at the University of San Francisco MFA in Writing Program. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program from 2012–2018. He lives in San Francisco with his husband.
