In an interview with the writer A J Adaire, Mari SanGiovanni explains how she began writing — “I wanted to read something like Rubyfruit Jungle only for a big, fat, loud Italian family, only with some lesbos sprinkled in to complicate matters.” Admits that “tons of what I write is fueled by real life, but also totally fictionalized (so I won’t be sued by my family – hahaha)”. And explains the difficulties for an author of marketing herself and her hunch that getting a movie made “will sell more books and bring more people to the writing.” She also explains why she thinks lesbian movies are currently not going mainstream.
